Protect Yourself From Ticks This Summer

What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word “ticks” when discussing outdoor activities? Is it Lyme Disease? Is it parasites? The mere thought of a tick penetrating your skin is disturbing enough, so let’s talk about how you can protect you and your loved ones from tick bites.

Reduce the Tick Population

You need to create a hostile environment for the ticks, to prevent them from multiplying. First, remove leaf litter. Next, clear tall grasses and brush. Then, remove any trash from your yard where ticks may hide. A final option is to hire a pest management company to safely and effectively treat your yard. All of these options will help reduce the tick population around you.

Protect Yourself from Exposure

When you are near tall grasses, brush and trash outside, it’s best to wear light-colored clothing with long pants that are tucked into your socks. This helps to spot ticks on the outside of your clothes. Ensure your feet are covered and avoid sandals and open-toed shoes in a potential tick-infested area. Work to stay in the center of trails when hiking to avoid potential contact with vegetation on the side. Tick repellants can be used as a preventative measure too. When you enter your home, carefully inspect yourself to ensure a tick is not attached to you. Always check your children and animals too.

Treat Tick Bites Immediately

If the tick is embedded in your skin, use tweezers with a thin tip to grip the tick as close to the skin as possible. With even pressure, pull the tick upwards. This method will typically remove the entire tick, including the mouth. Be sure to disinfect the area with rubbing alcohol or a topical antibiotic. Make note of the day the tick is removed and the location of the site. Watch for signs of infection and symptoms of tick-associated diseases. Consult your physician with any concerns. Some doctors prefer to see their patients right away and have them bring the tick with them for testing. Your physician will walk you through the next steps in the treatment process.
